April 30 - 2 Corinthians 2

Verses 1-4 continue from chapter 1 recounting the divisions, oppositions that existed in the Corinthian church. Some didn't like Paul. Some thought he was too harsh. Some didn't want Paul to come back...

Verses 5-11 speak of confronting and dealing with sin in the church. Many of us don't like to confront our brothers and sisters but like to turn a blind eye. But, as a church we are called to help our brothers and sisters grow, and if there is a sin that is causing trouble in the church then that must be dealt with... and the sorrow that it does bring must also be dealt with. Forgive the brother/sister and bring him/her back into the church. Many times a shameful sin usually causes one to be an outcast. That is not the case. So, we do not turn a blind eye - but we also do not make one an outcast. We love as Jesus loved.

Verse 12-17 Because of Paul's troubled relationship with the Corinthians - he sent Titus ahead to gauge the atmosphere.. and he was supposed to meet Paul in Troas (ancient Troy) but it didn't happen. And without an update from Titus, Paul did not have the "peace" to go back yet - so he went onto Macedonia instead.
Here Paul recognizes that he is but a messenger of God's word - that some will reject and some will accept - but nonetheless he is sent by God to do His work and that is all that matters. Whether he faces opposition or acceptance, he will follow Jesus' lead and go wherever He leads.

April 29 - 2 Corinthians 1

A little background on 2 Corintians
Romans was a general letter that was circulated widely to all Christians..
2 Corinthians is a letter to the church at Corinth (a metropolitan ancient city known for its wealth, its arts, its roads...) It was a major city.

And after Paul left Corinth, divisions arose in Corinth. People had argued about issues like circumcision, Gentiles versus Jews, which leader to follow (Apollos, Paul, etc.). There were a lot of divisions in this church and this letter attempts to bring people back to the core of what really matters.

In the midst of the confusion and suffering caused by factions and divisions - may God comfort us all. For He is our comforter in this time of distress. And sometimes, even these discomforts (because we know that our lives are in His hands) are for our growth and salvation...

May God's comfort be with us all...

April 28 - Romans 16

sorry for the late post

In the beginning of this chapter, Paul recognizes the hard workers for Christ.
Many women are mentioned here.. one notable - Priscilla and Aquila (the wife's name is mentioned before the husband) - it could be because the wife came to Christ first, she may have been more involved -- but here is one great example of the role of women in leadership positions.

Verse 17-18 -- There are people who use bits and pieces of the Word of God for their own gain. Sometimes we don't like what we hear in the Word of God and only listen to the parts that we like.. Or, we use one part of the Bible over and over and over again - almost ignoring all of the other parts.

May we study and obey the WHOLE word of God. This is our call to worship Him WHOLLY.

April 27 - Romans 15

So, how do we respond to Christians that are "weaker"? These are the Christians that act so immature, disrespect God, sometimes take Jesus as a joke.. disrupt Bible study, text during worship.. you know..

We can get mad. But, that is not what God tells us to do.

Admittedly, some of these Christians are "weaker" -- their faith is still immature - yet, these are our brothers and sisters and how do we respond?
We try to build them up, encourage them, help them get stronger. For our sake? No.
For their sake - so that they may experience the joy and hope that comes from knowing and walking with Him.

verse 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

April 26 - Romans 14:1-23

Some things are not worth getting worked up about...
v. 19 Let us make every effort to do things that will lead to peace and edification(building each other up).

Every believer is at a different place in their growth.. Some listen to secular music, some don't. Some are obsessed with facebook some are not.. Are these really things to judge each other with?
Is it really that big of a deal?

If someone has a big issue with listening to secular music or with doing certain things - make sure you don't cause that person to stumble by disrespecting them. Do all things to maintain peace. If they will be offended, don't do it.

These little bitty things are not what should concern us but rather the really big thing of salvation...

April 24 - Romans 13:1-7

Authorities are put in place to maintain order.. The only reason we fear authority is when we do wrong. They don't carry weapons of punishment or have the job of giving tickets or bringing an accusation against you for no reason. They are there to help you stay on the "good" path.

Respect governing authorities placed over you. Pray for them. Follow the law so that the law isn't something that causes you to stumble (i.e. getting in trouble for breaking the law.)

Follow the law.. It's just smart to not get in trouble. There is enough things to fear in the world - a simple law and the "po-po" or your principal shouldn't be one of them. Be smart... :)

April 23 - Romans 12:9-21

There is a lot being said here and it is pretty straight forward. What is God saying to you today? Was there a particular tugging at your heart as you were reading?
v. 18 If it is possible - live at peace with everyone. Sometimes you've done all you can and there's nothing more you can do. Then leave it be.
v. 21 do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.

About heaping burning coals: fiery coals were seen as a sign of God's judgment. So if you serve your enemy it's kind of like clearing yourself of God's judgment in regards to that. In other words - in life you can't avoid people who will dislke you but that doesn't mean you have to return that hatred - leave vengeance for God. That's His job. Just be as lameless and honorable in your own actions.

April 22 - Romans 12:1-8

Paul begins - therefore... (so after all has been said) - offer your bodies as living sacrifices. In Paul's day, they thought the body useless and often referred to it as a tomb, trapping their spirits..
Paul was saying that in this lifetime, use your bodies as a living sacrifice, an act of worship to God. Don't see it as something that is here today and will be gone in eternity. Use what you have today and use it for the glory of God because tomorrow you may not have it.

Take what you've got, your mind, your body - everything and be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. Then your mind will be made new and all things that you didn't know before will become very clear to you. You will begin to understand what God's will is, what pleases God -- you will begin to see the world as God sees the world and understand it as God.

May we offer up our lives to God that He may transform us and make us new...

April 21 - Romans 11:33-36

This is what we would call a Doxology. "Doxa" means glory in Greek.

for eleven chapters Paul has been taking us through the basics of our faith, our salva tion with questions and answers.

and after all has been said, argued, and answered -- and even with more questions lingering the appropriate response is praise - to give glory to God.

Wonder: oh! How deep is His wisdom and knowledge... So deep that I cannot grasp it. You just can't figure Him out sometimes.
Humility: Who has ever told God what to do or taught Him anything. No one.
Exalt: All things come from Him and through Him. Without God nothing would exist. He does deserve all the credit and glory and praise.

have a doxa moment today and give God the glory.

April 20 - Romans 11:1-32

Why did God allow the Israelites' hearts to be hardened so that they would not believe? Why would God allow some to fall away and not others?

If we return to Romans 9 - the lesson on God's sovereignty begins. In simpler terms, God is God and I am not.

As human beings we are born into this world - a world of real, tangible(touchable) things. Yet, we are also introduced into something bigger- the world that includes God in it. And, little by little our relationship with God doesn't mean God fitting into our worlds but our lives finding their place in God's.

One BIG part of that is understanding God's BIGness, His Almighty powerfulness.. His sovereignty.

Sometimes He stops catastrophes from occurring. Sometimes He withholds. Sometimes He leaves us to our stubbornness and allows us to suffer. Why?

Because God knows what He is doing. There is a reason for EVERYTHING.

Why did God let the Israelites stay in their stubborn ways? Simply, so that the Gentiles would have an opportunity to CHOOSE God. Then, some Israelites will return because the relationship they were chosen for - are now in the hands of the Gentiles. (v.11)

How come God doesn't keep us from making mistakes? Because He wants us to choose Him. He wants us to give ourselves to Him. He doesn't force His creation to worship and love because love is something that one choose to give. Love cannot be forced.
And, sometimes he does keep us from making mistakes (we just might not realize it) and sometimes he lets us make mistakes because there is a reason (a lesson, etc.)

God is a really smart God. He knows what He's doing. What does faith mean? We trust that God has the whole world in His hands and He knows what He is doing.
Who are we to complain to God? Can the clay complain to the potter?
This is a tough lesson in faith but I pray that we may learn to trust in our Sovereign, BIG God.

Apr 19, 2010

April 19 - Romans 10:1-21

Something the Israelites didn't quite get was that salvation was not going to happen by works. They already messed up in following the law.. it is by faith.
Believe and confess your faith that Jesus has saved us and it is Jesus who has made things right between us and God. It is not by our effort at all - so we can't boast about it. We can't credit ourselves for our own righteousness...

Yet - how can people believe God if they have never heard about God? If they choose to reject or accept is not up to you but the responsibility of sharing the word of God and the good news of the Gospel is upon us.

How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!

May we have beautiful feet!

Apr 18, 2010

April 18 - Romans 9:1-33

Why does God show some mercy and allow others to continue in their rebellious ways?

The answer: Only God knows...

One thing we do know about God's character is that He is a God of justice. He will never do anything just because He feels like it. He is never inconsistent. He will always act according to His justice.
And, we will never understand why God shows mercy and why sometimes God allows destruction to happen?

This is the Sovereignty of God. He is Sovereign. There is no one greater than God.

Any objections?

Well, this is a big part of our faith in God - that we trust that He knows what He is doing and we don't. He is the potter and we are the clay.

We can try to understand His ways - but remember, God is way big for us. His ways are greater... too big for us to ever get the "big picture"... We'll only just see our itty-bitty picture.

May we surrender to the BIGness of God.. the Sovereignty of God. Recognize we are small. And trust in our BIG God. He is BIG. And this BIG God loves us very much so stick with Him.

April 17 - Romans 8:28-39

What matters most in life...
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (v. 38-39)

Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Nothing.

And nothing else matters.

Apr 16, 2010

April 16 - Romans 8:18-27

We have so much to look forward to!

No matter what suffering we are going through right now, there is such an awesome future ahead of us! And Paul says such an amazing statement
"But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has?" (v. 24)

May we know TRUE HOPE and may we live hopefully to see what lies ahead and not what is happening in the present time. Because we have a lot to look forward to..
And, we're not alone in this:

...the Spirit helps us in our weakness. And even when we don't know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit prays on our behalf, tells us what to pray for... and in that praying we are realigned with God's will..

So, through prayer we get back on track with God. If you haven't been praying and you're just "thinking" about things or "talking" with other people about things - most likely you're either frustrated, angry, worried, etc. Does this sound like you? I think that means that we need to pray.. and have some REALIGNMENT with GOD'S WILL AND DIRECTION Time.

Apr 15, 2010

April 15 - Romans 8:1-17

vv. 1-4 THEREFORE - always means it's continuing from what was said in the previous verses. SO, for those who are in Christ sin has no power over them. There is no condemnation. Because the law can't save - aren't we glad Jesus does save! (The law only condemns and reveals our sinfulness)

Jesus has given us a second chance. And it's not just a second chance to really live - he lets us call God ABBA father. That is a very personal way of addressing our Father. It's like appa in Korean or daddy.. We have been given the Spirit of God and so may we be led by the Spirit of God.

But this is where Paul wants to address something. For many of us, even though we are filled with the Spirit there are times when we are timid in our faith. We are afraid to be bold and follow God and so out of that FEAR we succumb to sin.

"For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship." (Or daughtership)

May we not act out of fear in our lives but may we act out of the confidence that comes from knowing that the Spirit of God lives in us (that means He's constantly walking and talking to you) and may we act like the princes and princesses of God's kingdom.

Think about it. How would you live differently knowing you are a prince or a princess?

Apr 14, 2010

April 14 - Romans 7

Vv. 1-6 We are no longer under the law because we also died through Jesus' death and have been raised with Him into a NEW LIFE. We don't fear the Law anymore because the law leads to sin and death but now we are living according to God's standard of grace.
But the main issue is - we have been raised into a NEW LIFE but we still live on this earth in our earthly bodies (sinful flesh) -- and here we find our struggle.

Question: So does that mean the law is sin? In other words, if the law didn't exist then would sin not exist either?
Answer: No way. Sin exists but the law makes known what sin is. Without the law we wouldn't know what sin is.
And - it's kind of like when we're told NOT to do something - we want to do it even more. That's kind of what the law does to us because we're so prone to sin.

Does that mean the law is bad?
No. The law came as a way for us to become righteous but we soon find out that we cannot live perfectly according to the law. We always mess up. So, the law was one way for people to become righteous but it became instead the standard by which everyone fell short. (But God knew all of that - and that's why Jesus was always in the picture)

So in the verses following v. 14 is the most confusing part.
But simply...Inside all of us is an inner struggle between our flesh(sinful) and our Godly desires. Every time we have a desire to do good, evil is right there next to us(v. 21). So, we battle daily between what we want to do and the sin that tries to control us.
But one day, Jesus will come again and really take us home to our heavenly places and give us new bodies and we will never have to struggle like this again. Praise God for Jesus!

So, struggle daily and sometimes your sinful nature will win over you - but by the Holy Spirit and the grace of God - keep trying! And forgive one another and have grace as we are all in this journey together.

Apr 13, 2010

April 12-13 Romans 5&6

What are you a slave to?
How do you determine that?

What do your actions say?
Are you a slave to anger when you allow your anger to control your actions?
Are you a slave to greed when you allow your greed to drive all that you do? (ex: I want lots of money, that's why I study)
Are you a slave to humor when you try to make everything into a joke?

One place in India is being praised for putting emphasis on the Gross National HAPPINESS rather than the Gross National Product (how much money a country has)
But, as I heard that I realized... then they are a slave to happiness and really - we can't be happy all the time - that's not what life is all about..

Paul even spoke about it. There are times of suffering and even in the midst of that suffering there is hope and JOY!

Be a slave to righteousness... The word Paul uses to describe himself when he uses the word "servant" actually meas "slave".

Think about it...

April 10 - Romans 4:1-25

Faith vs. Works

Faith comes first. We believe in God and the "work" that we do afterward is an evidence of our faith. Just doing the work doesn't matter. That's why going through the motions of religion doesn't mean anything unless there is faith that motivates the "work."
For example, Abraham believed God first and the act of circumcision came after as an outward sign of the inward faith.
In baptism, we believe God first and as an outward sign before fellow believers we are baptized.

Simply put - faith matters. Faith makes us righteous, not works.

If we compare ourselves to others by what we do and judge others for not being as good a Christian as ourselves, we are basically saying that works is more important than faith. In v. 4 Paul gives an example of the difference between works and faith. When you work for something, what you receive in exchange (your pay) is an obligation - it is what is owed to you. When you receive something because you trust in God then you receive something that you could not have worked for.
Thus, salvation, the sacrifice that would cleanse you of all your sins -- you can't work for. It's humanly impossible. So, our righteousness has little to do with how good we are but rather our faith in God declares us righteous.

What does faith look like?
1. It's humble. It knows that we are righteous not because of what we have done but rather what Jesus has done.
2. It's thankful. It is grateful for the life that is given to us.
3. It is evident in our works. Faith is exemplified and demonstrated through our acts. Each act should reflect that we trust in God. If we truly believe that God has His perfect and good will, we are at peace no matter what circumstances may come because we believe that God is leading us.

What else does faith look like?

May we have faith.

Apr 9, 2010

April 9 - Romans 3:21- 31

Romans 3:23 is a verse everyone should memorize for it is one of the basic statements of our faith. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." As discussed previously the Law was given to us so that we would realize we are sinners.

It is only by God's grace that is received through a trusting faith that recognizes that without GOD's grace we cannot be declared righteous. The only reason we get to call ourselves a friend of God is because we have faith that His blood is payment enough for our sins. By His gift of grace through His blood we have been spared from punishment that we deserve. (vv. 25-26)

So another Q&A comes up.
Q: If we are not justified by what we do (law of works) but by faith then can we just throw out the law since faith takes care of everything?
A: No way. It is by faith that we are able to finally live according to the law because Christ transforms us and gives us the strength to overcome sin's power over us. The Law is no longer something that makes us feel bad. It becomes the standard by which we live the life we were created for and meant to live.

It is by God's grace received through faith that we live life according to God's pefect law

Apr 8, 2010

April 8 - Romans 3:1-20

We are not righteous by any standard. We can't even argue our way out of justifying our sin. (that's what is outlined below).. Nope, our sinning doesn't make God look better... We're so busy thinking in human terms that we're not thinking what God is thinking.

Let's try to think the way God thinks...
The LAW isn't there so that we can prove ourselves to be good.. The law is there simply to prove that we just don't cut it - we are sinners. As v. 20 says - we become "conscious of our sin" and that is the first step towards repentance.

Vv. 1-8 is in the format of a debate. A question followed by Paul's response... these are some futile arguments..

vv. 1-2
Q: So does being a Jew or being circumcised have no value at all?
A: being a Jew or being circumcised does not protect one from God's judgment but has a different purpose/value - in that the Jews (as original recipients of God's promise) have a responsibility to be the keeper of God's laws. They have a special role indeed.

vv.3-4
Q:Does our sinfulness make God look better? Kind of like.. white looks more white next to a darker black.
A: Paul says - Nope. No way. God doesn't change or get better because we become more sinful. He is who He is and His glory shines no matter what.

vv. 7-8
Q: If my sinfulness makes God look better since He is so righteous - shouldn't He be grateful that my sinfulness is making Him look good.
A: Dude, seriously. Do we even need Paul to answer this one?

Apr 7, 2010

April 7 - Romans 2:17-29

There are many outward signs of being religious. For the Jews, it was circumcision. It was a symbol that you were in a pact with God. You're "with" God. During the Nazi regime, it was one way to find the Jewish people.

For Christians, you show up at church every Sunday, Friday.. you come to prayer meetings, you do your bible reading, you raise your hand when you know the answer to a Jesus question...
There are many ways to show outwardly that you're a Christian...

Yet, Paul was trying to get the Jews, especially, away from thinking only about the things we do outwardly because that wasn't a problem. It's like "Oh, I'm circumcised. I'm good." and they could go on and do whatever we want.

For Christians, it's like - "I went to church this Sunday" - I'm good for all of my religious duties for this week.

Paul was saying that even if you were circumcised and you acted in sin or held something bad in your heart- it's like the circumcision doesn't even matter..
It's what's on the inside that counts.

Circumcision of your heart -- if we really took a deep look inside your mind and heart - would we notice that your heart is fully devoted to God.

If we followed this - maybe we wouldn't hear that Christians are hypocrites so much.

Apr 6, 2010

April 6 - Romans 2:1-16

vv. 1-4 When we pass judgment on others, we play God. We act like we are perfect when we are not. Simply put, no matter how good we think we are - we are in no place to judge others... no matter what.

vv. 7-13 It's not just a matter of knowing the truth of God's word but obeying it. Our life and our doing is a reflection of our faith. Faith is not just an act of thinking or believing but rather trusting to the point of acting.
So, what you DO is very important for what you DO demonstrates our faith.

May we not judge others for when we evaluate our actions (our thoughts, our words, our physical actions) we find that we are not God and so we are in no place to judge at all.

God will judge and show the final tally in the end so may we take care of ourselves before jumping to judge anyone else.

April 4 & 5 - Romans 1

Sorry yesterday's post comes late.
A note on the Letter to the Romans: This is one of the most influential books in the New Testament and some say that this is the most important because it lays out the gospel. Many people even memorize Romans and some study it daily. It's also a very difficult book with a lot being said in these few chapters. May the Lord give us wisdom and clarity as we seek to understand and know God more fully through the reading of His word.

April 4 - Romans 1:1-17
Verse 1 - Paul introduces himself as servant first. This word is "doulos" in Greek and really means slave. Then, he uses the word "apostle" to describe himself. Apostle means "one who is sent." This word is designated for the few that are personally called by Jesus and for those who knew him personally. Most likely his title as servant would've been enough but remember Paul's history. He persecuted Christians and in some ways he needed to prove that he is now with the Christians, that he isn't faking it.

Vv. 2-4 - Paul mentions that the gospel is from God and this gospel isn't anything new. It was mentioned thousands of years prior through the prophets of the Old Testament and Jesus is the one to fulfill and complete it through his death and resurrection.

v. 12 We are spiritually strengthened by mutually encouraging one another. Gathering together is an integral part of our spiritual growth. Without meeting together and sharing our faith - one cannot grow as a Christian.

v. 16 I'm not ashamed of the gospel... Paul lived this out to the point of his death.

April 5 - Romans 1:18-32
Paul lays down the basis for the need for salvation..our sins.
v. 18 What causes the wrath of God? the ungodliness of people, their sins
the problem is that...
vv. 19-23 the fact that God is great is obvious (plain) through all the things He has created. Just look all around you. Yet, they would rather take the created things (the stuff around us) than God himself. They would rather be foolish than wise.
v. 25 they served the creature rather than the Creator. Look at a magazine rack at a bookstore. How many magazines are called "GOD"? Nope. Food and Wine, Leisure magazine, Rockstar, Pop, Skiing.... you get the point..
God gives them over to their own sins.. pretty much, God allows them to have what they choose. They chose sin, they can have it. God won't force you to honor him.

So their choosing sin led them to dishonoring their bodies, acting in unnatural relations (homosexual acts), gossip, murder, etc.

v. 32 and even though they know that sinners are deserving of death, they do it anyways. And, not just by themselves, they encourage others to sin as well.

our sins, as we do them and as we even encourage sin, are deserving of death. So, begins our journey into the power of the gospel for us to save us from death!
To the unsaved this may be nonsense but to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1 Cor 1:18)

Apr 3, 2010

April 3 - Mark 16

Jesus told them what was to happen after his death yet none remembered or rather refused to believe that He would resurrect. It could be due to the fact that they had their own idea of what the Messiah was going to be like and how the redemption of Israel was going to play out -- like a strong leader taking over and conquering the Romans.
Or maybe they just forgot what Jesus said to them.

Sometimes we don't really hear what Jesus is saying because of our own ideas about the world or we are just really not paying attention.

May we open our ears to truly hear what He is saying to us - not just what we want to hear or what we think we hear.

May the Lord reveal to us daily what this resurrection really means.

Apr 2, 2010

April 2 - Mark 15

The Word of God in itself is so amazing, especially this account that it needs no commentary.

Share your thoughts below on what stood out to you. Every time I read this account, new images are revealed to me.

For me:
v. 5 the silence of Jesus amazes me... and it puzzled Pilate too. "Aren't you going to say something?"
v. 11 it's amazing how the chief priests stirred up the crowd to do the wrong thing. It's amazing what a large group of people can do. they can do harm and they can do good.
v. 39 -- though the soldiers mocked him and there is no denying the power of Jesus - that He is the Son of God. I want to have that undeniable faith.
v. 43 I think the "boldness" of Joseph of Arimathea is never recognized. He wanted to have the honor of placing Jesus's body to rest in an honorable way. He didn't hesitate to take the opportunity and he did it quickly so that he wouldn't miss this opportunity... Do I see and take the opportunities that are given to me?

April 1 - Mark 14:27-72

The Last Supper and the events described in this chapter happened the day before Jesus' crucifixion which is Thursday (today of Holy Week).

In just a matter of few hours all of the schemes of humankind come to play out and even the disciples will come to know something about this Jesus they never did before.

Verses 27-31 Peter and all the others insisted that they wouldn't turn their backs on Jesus. Yet, once given the opportunity the others ran away and Peter denied even speaking curses.

As Jesus prays a hard prayer at Gethsemane he is taken away and arrested. He is betrayed with a kiss...
As he stands before the Sanhedrin it is obvious they have no idea how to accuse Jesus and none of it makes sense. They have no case yet Jesus is being accused.

Continue to meditate and think upon the events that occurred before His crucifixion. What was on His mind? What do these false accusations, betrayals, ultimate physical death and His separation from the Father God mean for us today? If we are saved, what does this salvation mean?
